Immediate Release

Grand Falls-Windsor, NL – The 2023 Herder Memorial Championships will begin in Deer Lake this coming Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Hodder Memorial Stadium.  The 88-year-old trophy will be up for grabs for the Deer Lake Red Wings, champions of the West Coast Senior Hockey League and the Southern Shore Breakers, winners of the Avalon East Senior Hockey League.

The Red Wings have two Herder titles dating back to 2001 and 2005, while the Breakers have won the historic trophy six times.

The Red Wings knocked off the Corner Brook Royals to win the West, and the Breakers held off the St. John’s Caps to secure a birth in the provincial championship.

This will be the first provincial championship since 2019.  The Breakers captured the trophy last season as result of winning the AESHL finals, as the lone league in the province.

Gary Gale is the Senior Chair, for Hockey NL, and is excited for the provincial championship return.  “We look forward to having a great series and are hopeful that the return of the championship, will spearhead senior hockey back to its envied level in the entire province”.
